Every year, the Iowa City Community School District takes Martin Luther King Jr. day off from school in commemoration of his life and service to society. In addition to this, this past January, West High decided to hold a day of sessions about issues important in society as a tribute to the social activist Dr. King was. This included sessions on a variety of issues, including race, gender, social activism, African-American culture, and community service. The school newspaper, West Side Story, created a session called the "Portrait Project": a session allowing photographers to give back to the West community by taking free portraits or senior pictures for West students around the school.
